Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement program

Learning Opportunities Program

Program Details

The Learning Opportunities Program assists Canadian researchers, graduate students, research staff, policy analysts, and program providers to develop specialized skills and experience to improve the conduct or application of tobacco related research in Canada. Applicants may use funds to learn new lab or analytical techniques; receive mentorship in writing a grant application; gain experience applying research within a policy, practice or advocacy setting; or develop specific research and evaluation skills from an academic mentor.

Eligible Expenses
Funds from the Learning Opportunities Program may be used to cover costs for travel, accommodation, and meals to visit one or more mentors in a university, research institute, non-governmental organization, or government agency in Canada.  Visits to international destinations will also be considered. Applicants must provide proof that a prospective mentor has agreed to host them. The Learning Opportunities Program will NOT provide funds for an applicant to attend a scientific conference or symposium.

Eligible Applicants

An applicant must intend to conduct or use research to reduce tobacco use in Canada. Applicants do not need to have an established track record in tobacco control research, policy or practice.  Rather, they must only demonstrate their intention to do so in the immediate future.  An applicant must be at least 18 years of age, reside in Canada and fall into at least one of the following categories:

Grant Amounts

The Learning Opportunities Program will cover eligible expenses to a maximum of $1,500 per person, or a maximum of $5,000 for workshops or groups of five or more people. In addition, an honorarium is available to the host mentor upon completion of the learning opportunity.
